To approach Burgos is to approach the shield of the north. Founded on July 13, 884, this city was not born from commerce or trade, but from the necessity of war. King Alfonso III ordered Count Diego Porcelos to establish a fortress here to check the advance of armies from the south. This military inception is etched into the very limestone of the region.
