The story of Kassel does not begin with the grand baroque parks or the avant-garde art exhibitions for which it is currently famous. It begins in the mists of the early 10th century, specifically on February 18, 913, when King Conrad I signed two documents in a place called "Chassalla." This initial mention in a royal charter effectively birthed the city's recorded consciousness, planting a flag in the timeline of German civilization that has stood for over a millennium.

Because its origins are rooted so deeply in the medieval era, Kassel possesses a gravity that younger cities lack. It spent centuries as a princely residence, a status that shaped its physical and cultural DNA. The landscape itself demanded fortification and governance, situated strategically on the Fulda River.
