To understand Uruguay, you must first look at a map. It is the "Banda Oriental," the eastern bank of the Uruguay River, a nation defined by its geography as the buffer between two colossal neighbors, Argentina and Brazil. Uruguay's personality was forged in this vise. It became a nation that values a high literacy rate, a stable middle class, and progressive social laws (legalizing divorce in 1907) above all else. It is a nation that doesn't need to shout. It just endures, and builds.
