The 19th-century unification under Bismarck’s "Blood and Iron" was less a celebration and more a geopolitical necessity. But this new, powerful center could not hold. After the catastrophic collapses of two world wars, the nation was cleaved in two by the Iron Curtain, a physical manifestation of its internal, philosophical war.
