This landscape of extremes bred extreme history. This was no quiet backwater. The oases here were vital arteries of the Silk Road. The city of Merv (now a UNESCO site) was not just a stop; it was the "Queen of the World," a global center of science and Islamic scholarship until the Mongols tragically leveled it in 1221. Before that, the Parthian Empire rose from Nisa to challenge the power of Rome itself. This land has seen empires rise from its dust and vanish back into it.
