Aurora is defined by a singular act of fusion. Before February 4, 1857, there was no single 'Aurora'-there were rival settlements on the east and west banks of the Fox River. The incorporation date marks the marriage of these two sides into one civic body, a union that has defined the city's struggle and success ever since. This is a city that had to learn to bridge the divide, quite literally, with distinct downtown areas on both sides of the river that still maintain unique flavors today.
Known as the 'City of Lights' because it was the first in the United States to use electric street lights for public lighting in 1881, Aurora has a history of illuminating the dark. It is a gritty, authentic counterweight to its suburban neighbors. The architecture here is heavy-impressive limestone, brick, and the stunning Paramount Theatre that brings Broadway to the Fox Valley. Modern Aurora is a mosaic, boasting a massive, diverse population that gives the city a richness of food, art, and language that feels more like a mini-metropolis than a suburb.
